Chapter One (pg. 2) I don't think I could have really understood the need for animal transport until I fully grasped the gravity of the situations these animals face. My learning curve was agonizing. It forced me to be privy to information like which animals were out of time and the dates they would be unwillingly put to sleep. One click, and they were all looking at me. [OnTheRoadAgain] NY - Dogs - This is the euth. list for Sunday. Please help… I learned early on that homeless animals are not in danger because monsters loom and lie in wait to kill them when their shelter stay expires. Their lives are in peril because there is not enough room for them, and because our society currently allows homeless animals to be destroyed and disposed of when the space they inhabit is required for yet another unwanted, unfortunate creature. For Lorraine, Debbie, Gayle, Kevin, Sandy, Stacy, Kara, Cynthia, Janet, Rande and the many other people I have been so privileged to know, this modus operandi is simply unacceptable, and even more so they say if we dare call ourselves a modern and civilized society. So far, the solutions I've heard proposed to end or even lessen this problem require an enormous shift in the way we perceive and respond to our nation's homeless animals. I thought about the creatures hopelessly trapped in society's unwanted animal web and mulled over what could be done for them. The truth was depressing. Even if society crawls out of the dark and eventually reaches that elusive tipping point - the spark that will finally ignite and alter our mindset and behavior, it will be too late for millions of homeless animals. Not hundreds. Not thousands. Millions. The aforementioned people have made conscious decisions to move beyond the bleak details in favor of doing something, no matter how small, to alleviate animal homelessness and its associated miseries wherever they may find it. In the eyes of these seemingly ordinary yet quite extraordinary individuals, each number coming up for euthanasia corresponds to a tag. Each tag is attached to a living being with fur, a tail, and a face that begs to be loved. Each life at risk necessitates swift action on the part of a team of people who know how to work together to get things done. Seize The Day! For people positioned on the front lines of homeless animal life saving, there is today to contend with, and if today there is one heartworm-positive Beagle and three tabby kittens at death's door, then there is no time to rant, rave, theorize, or place blame. A rescue is in order, and though it can't as yet solve all of our homeless animal woes, technology will be summoned to do some wonderful and awe-inspiring things.
